Well, do you agree Selling is the Word’s Oldest Occupation?
And if so, everyone should be able to Master the skills of Selling, since there must be a wealth of information available.
I knew at an early age (10) that I really enjoyed SELLING because I was led to believe, and still do, Selling is an honorable vocation. What other vocation can offer the enjoyment of a life filled with the daily knowledge they had contributed to the well-being and satisfaction of so many people?
A lot of the systems and mindset I developed was through the studying of Orison Swett Marden, James Allen, Wallace Wattles, Charles Haanel, Napoleon Hill, and Og Mandino, apply some direct mental exercises, learn how to pay it forward and attend Webinars weekly.
I determine to render more and better service, each day, than I am being paid to render. Those that reach the top are the ones who are not content with doing only what is required of them.” ― Og Mandino, The Greatest Salesman In The World
It was the re-introduction to Og Mandino’s famous books that energized me since I purchased the book when first published in 1968 and it was most instrumental in MY fine tuning my developing Sales Skills and I credit to be pivotal for my Success in the SELLING Business for the past 50 years.
I actually followed the directions of the Book, The Greatest Salesman in the World…..
Reading each scroll daily for a month and applying a daily action to my Definite major Purpose, declared in 1960 thanks to the direction of Think and Grow Rich.
What defines SELLING as the Oldest Profession?
If you think about it, everything that has happened (good or bad) to mankind, over the eons, has been the result of a Sale.
Do you agree?
Og Mandino books intensify that fact and cause those with a burning desire, to improve the Skill Sets required to SELL effectively.
Selling is most rewarding, not only with an opportunity to appreciate potentially unlimited income, but also the sense of real accomplishment and the knowledge that your skill has SOLVED the problem initiated by the Prospect (potential customer).
My personal experience has proved that it is NOT the money received that provides a sense of well-being from being a Salesman. It is the sense of knowing you have Helped Others solve a problem they possessed. Don’t misunderstand that compensation is important.
It is that compensation that allows a professional sales person to grow and help others.
The basis of Mandino’s first book The Greatest Salesman in the World is the 10 scrolls available to the protagonist, Hafid as he embarks on his quest to become The World’s Greatest Salesman in the World.
These scrolls are to read 3Xs daily, once out loud. It is that “requirement” that stops most people from being impacted positively by this book.
I followed the exercises several times in the past decades and have been renewed in energy and success each time.
I begin a new life. Today I shed my old skin, which hath, too long, suffered the bruises of failure and the wounds of mediocrity. Today I am born anew and my birthplace is a vineyard where there is fruit for all. Today I will pluck grapes of wisdom from the tallest and fullest vines in the vineyard, for these were planted by the wisest of my profession who have come before me, generation upon generation. Today I will savor the taste of grapes from these vines and verily I will swallow the seed of success buried in each and new life will sprout within me……..

My reading of Scroll One
It is really interesting that this BOOK does little to share the SKILLS of SELLING, but it does lay the foundation and direction to BECOME the person who OWNS control of their Habits and Thought processes. My experiences have proved that my OWNING the power to perceive and conceive have been crucial in my ability to Sell easily and have customers who felt very well served. In fact, doing the best job possible assures your customer base to return and NOT spend your life worrying about continually building new “lists”
More on that idea in a later post
Are you ready to invest a little Time and Energy to increase your Selling Skills and Life Skills?
I really recommend the small investment of capital (as little as $3.00). I enjoyed getting the Kindle Version lately now that I am becoming more technically savvy.

I was blessed at a very young age to learn the first principle of selling. A first principle is a basic, foundational proposition or assumption that cannot be deduced from any other proposition or assumption. In other words, no premise comes before. That principle stated that selling was about finding out what the other person is looking for, and helping that person to get it. I learned it from the first and best book that I ever read on selling, Frank Bettger’s How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling. As time went on, I learned that the sales process is a sales conversation, nothing more, nothing less. It was a trifecta that included a desirable outcome, confidence, and cost, as the topics. Anything less would not be adequate, while anything more would be a distraction. Og Mandino’s classic is important because it reinforces the mindset that selling as a true professional can be very rewarding career.
I am honored to have a person of your stature in the Sales and Business world commenting.
Thank you, Gary.
Love this statement “I learned that the sales process is a sales conversation, nothing more, nothing less”
Amazingly in the past few years with all of the Tech tools, that “conversation” has seemed to diminish.
BTW, years ago, I record the 10 scrolls in the present tense.
And have gone through the complete ‘cycle’ of daily recitation 4 times since 1969.
Listening to the material in the Present Tense creates a sense of reality, not Hope.
